    Background: TEL AVIV, ISRAEL

Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir was re-elected leader of the Herut Party at a convention in Tel Aviv on April 12. He won 407 of the 725 votes cast in the leadership poll. Former Defence Minister Ariel Sharon took 306 votes of 41 per cent, a figure which political observers said could induce Shamir to re-appoint him to an important ministerial post. The former general was forced to resign after a judicial inquiry found he was indirectly to blame for the 1982 Beirut massacre of Palestinian refugees by Lebanese Falangists. Sharon, now Minister without Portfolio, insisted on challenging Shamir for the leadership to show he still had the support of the party's right-wing. The result, according to Reuters, was regarded as a blow to Shamir's prestige and a boost for Sharon's political hopes. The opposition Labour Party will fight the general election under the leadership of Shimon Peres. After the Herut result was announced Shamir said if he won the July general election with the Likud coalition he would from a new government based on national need.
