  • Description

A HONG KONG-OWNED FREIGHTER, MAKING ITS WAY DOWN THE SAIGON RIVER ON SUNDAY, WAS SHELLED FROM THE BANK BY UNITS OF THE VIETCONG. THE FREIGHTER, THE "LORINDA", WAS DRIVEN AGROUND -- BUT WAS LATER REFLOATED AND WAS ABLE TO REACH SAIGON. THE "LORINDA" IS REGISTERED IN PANAMA.

SIX HOLES WERE BLOWN IN THE SIDE OF THE SHIP. A SHELL BURSTING IN THE WHEELHOUSE INJURED THE PILOT -- AND THE VESSEL WENT AGROUND.

IT WAS THE FIRST ATTACK ON COMMERCIAL SHIPPING IN THE SAIGON RIVER. THE ATTACK IS REPORTED TO HAVE LASTED ABOUT HALF-AN-HOUR. THE VIETCONG ARE SAID TO HAVE USED ARMOUR-PIERCING ANTI-TANK SHELLS, AND NAVAL AUTHORITIES IN SAIGON SAY THEIR APPARENT AIM WAS TO SINK THE VESSEL.
