  • Description

British Prime Minister James Callaghan has accepted a surprise invitation from President Anwar Sadat of Egypt to see him on his way home from his current tour of the Indian sub-continent. On his second full day in India (8 January), Mr Callaghan and his wife visited Agra, about 200 kilometres from New Delhi, to see the Taj Mahal-the marble mausoleum built by Moghul Emperor Shah Jahan for his wife.

SYNOPSIS: Earlier, Mr Callaghan walked a few steps from his suite at Rashtrapati Bhavan, the presidential palace in New Delhi where he has been staying to call on President Sanjiva Reddy and his family. He received the kind of warm welcome from the President which has characterised his tour of the sub-continent. Rashtrapati Bhavan was built by the British and used to be the official residence of the viceroys of India.

Mr Callaghan's other engagements included a visit to Raj Ghat, the shrine of Mahatma Gandhi who led India's struggle for independence from the British.

He also had talks on a wide range of international issues with his Indian counterpart, Mr Morarji Desai. Both Prime Ministers emphasised their rapport, despite several disagreements between their countries.

Mr Callaghan said the meeting had been 'fruitful', and he announced that Britain would be contributing 30 million pounds (about 57 million U.S. dollars) to a scheme to provide fertilisers for India's farmers. The meeting lasted 90 minutes over two sessions. The two leaders were joined by their officials for the second session.

Mr Callaghan is spending six days in India. His visit is the first by a Labour Prime Minister in office and only the third by any British premier.
