Background: ENGLAND'S SOCCER TEAM AVENGED THEIR FIRST HOME DEFEAT BY AN OVERSEAS SIDE - A 6-3 THRASHING BY HUNGARY 12 YEARS AGO - WHEN THEY BEAT HUNGARY 1-0 AT WEMBLEY, LONDON, TODAY (WEDNESDAY).

JIMMY GREAVES SCORED THE GOAL IN THE 16TH MINUTE - HIS 38TH FOR ENGLAND.

IT WAS ENGLAND'S FIRST VICTORY OVER HUNGARY SINCE 1963 AND WAS ACHIEVED MORE EASILY THAN THE SCORE SUGGESTS. ENGLAND HAD MUCH THE BETTER OF A TIME, DISAPPOINTING GAME, PARTICULARLY IN THE FIRST HALF WHEN THEY WERE PLAYING WITH THE WIND. HUNGARY FAILED TO LIVE UP TO THE REPUTATION THEY GAINED IN TOKYO LAST YEAR WHEN THEY WON THE OLYMPIC TOURNAMENT.

BOTH TEAMS WERE WEAKENED BY LAST MINUTE INJURIES, ENGLAND BEING WITHOUT LEFT WINGER BOBBY CHARLTON AND HUNGARY HAVING TO LEAVE OUT CENTRE FORWARD FLORIAN ALBERT.

ENGLAND APPEARED SET FOR A BIG WIN WHEN THE MATCH STARTED, FOR THEY LAUNCHED A SERIES OF DETERMINED RAIDS ON THE HUNGARIAN GOAL.

GREAVES OPENED THE SCORING WITH A SHOT FROM TERRY PAINE'S PASS BUT MISSED CHANCES OF ADDING TO THE SCORE A FEW MINUTES LATER. THE HUNGARIANS HAD THEIR CHANCES, TOO. CENTRE-FORWARD FERENC BENE COMPLETELY MISKICKED THE GREASY BALL WHEN UNMARKED A FEW YARDS FROM THE ENGLISH GOAL, AND RIGHT WINGER JANOS GOROCS ROUNDED OFF A FINE DRIBBLE BY SHOOTING STRAIGHT AT THE GOALKEEPER.

ENGLAND CAME NEAREST TO SCORING A SECOND GOAL IN THE 60TH MINUTE WHEN THE HUNGARIAN LEFT-BACK LASZLO SAROSI KICKED THE BALL OFF THE GOAL LINE AS IT WAS TRICKLING IN.

THE HUNGARIANS PLAYED ATTRACTIVE FOOTBALL ON THE GROUND AT TIMES, BUT LACKED FORCEFULNESS. APART FROM BENE, GOROCS WAS THE ONE OTHER VISITOR TO WORRY ENGLAND.

THE STADIUM WAS ONLY HALF FULL, 50,000 SPECTATORS BRAVING THE COLD, GUSTY WEATHER.
