  • Description

In India leaders of the ruling Janata Party say they are hoping for a settlement in a crisis which is threatening to split the party. The Janata crisis was precipitated last week when Home Minister, Mr. Charan Singh, made a speech saying the government had failed to take quick action against former Prime Minister, Mrs. Gandhi. Mr. Singh and his chief supporter Health Minister, Mr. Raj Narain, were dismissed. On Thursday (6 July) the two dismissed ministers held a meeting with supporters and have arranged to stage a mass rally in New Delhi on Monday (17 July) to stir up public support for their case.

SYNOPSIS: The plan to stage the mass rally followed a meeting of the two former Ministers' supporters on the lawn of Mr. Singh's New Delhi home. Speaking in Hindi, Mr. Singh told his followers the struggle developing in the Party was between the rich and the poor. He condemned his former colleagues for refusing to adopt Gandhian policies, and criticised the Party leadership for going too easy on former Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, It was this issue that led to Mr. Singh's dismissal. Much public support has emerged, prompting the two ex-Ministers to declare that the group they are now forming represents the real drive of the Janata Party.

Already, four junior ministers have resigned in support of the two ousted Ministers. However Prime Minister Morarji Desai says he is not concerned about a split in his 15-month-old government and intends to wait on Mr. Singh to initiate any peace moves.

Reports said Mr. Raj Narain, whose work as Health Minister impressed a wide section of the public, spoke stronger about the possibilities of a split. He said the Singh group would win the fight for control of the Janata Party.
