Background: Army General Arturo Corbetta was appointed Argentina's Federal Police Chief on Thursday (24 June).

SYNOPSIS: He was sworn in during a ceremony at the Golden Hall at police headquarters in Buenos Aires. One of the speakers was the Interior Minister, General Albano Harguindeguy. General Corbetta succeeded General Cesareo Cardozo, who was killed by a guerrilla bomb earlier this month.

Before his appointment, General Corbetta was in command of the Ninth Infantry Brigade. That was stationed in the southern city of Comodoro Rivadavia. He's the second police chief to be appointed since the military coup which toppled President Maria Estela Peron in March. It's thought General Cardoza was murdered by a left-wing organisation. Since his death the military junta have re-introduced the death penalty for killers of civilian government, military or judicial officials.
