  • Description

"No Maoris - no tour" ... "Don't take part in racial discriminations" ... "Morality before Rugby" ... "Be fair to Maoris" - such were the slogans carried by 400 Auckland University students as they marched to the Town Hall to present a petition protesting against the exclusion of Maoris from the All Black Rugby team.

Singing "God Defend New Zealand" the students walked through the streets of Auckland, applauded by spectators lining the route. The petition, signed by more than 1,700 people, was handed to Mayor X. N. Buttle. There were no incidents.

The All Black New Zealand Rugby team which is to tour South Africa in 1960, is to consist of white players only, the national Rugby Union has decided. A Citizens' All Black Tour Association, backed - among others - by the Associate-Minister of Maori Affairs Tirikatene, is taking the Rugby Union's supporters under heavy fire. The Association's chairmen, Rolland O'Regan, charged the New Zealand Broadcasting Service August 10 with imposing a ban on discussion of the All Black Maori issue, and with suppressing news on the protest movement. A fund has been set up to combat racial discrimination in the selection of national team players.
