  • Description

A CURFEW IS IN OPERATION IN THE TOGO CAPITAL OF LOME FOLLOWING AN ATTEMPTED COUP D'ETAT MONDAY AGAINST PRESIDENT NICOLAS GRUNITZKY. YESTERDAY LOME WAS CALM AGAIN.

ARMY UNITS, FOLLOWING THE PRESIDENT'S ORDERS, MAINTAINED STRICT SECURITY PRECAUTIONS IN LOME YESTERDAY. ALMOST ALL CIVIL SERVANTS AND PRIVATELY-EMPLOYED WORKERS WERE BACK AT WORK WHEN OFFICES AND SHOPS OPENED IN THE MORNING. THE ARMY ON MONDAY ANNOUNCED ITS LOYALTY TO THE PRESIDENT AND JOINED HIM IN STIFLING THE ATTEMPTED COUP AFTER A DAY OF MASS DEMONSTRATIONS TRIGGERED BY AN ILLICIT BROADCAST OVER THE STATE RADIO ANNOUNCING REVOLUTION.

TROOPS CONTINUED TO SEARCH FOR OSWALD AJAVON, DIRECTOR OF THE GOVERNMENT INFORMATION SERVICES, WHO IS ACCUSED BY PRESIDENT GRUNITZKY OF HAVING ORIGINATED THE BROADCAST COMMUNIQUE DECLARING THAT THE PRESIDENT HAD RESIGNED AND THE ARMY HAD TAKEN POWER.
