  • Description

A 24-HOUR STRIKE BY WORKERS IN FRANCE'S ESSENTIAL SERVICES IS DUE TO BEGIN TONIGHT (THURSDAY). IT WILL AFFECT RAILWAYMEN, POSTMEN, GAS AND ELECTRICITY WORKERS, TEACHERS, BUSMEN, MINERS AND AIRPORT STAFF -- 7 MILLION WORKERS IN ALL.

THE STRIKE WILL NOT BEGIN SIMULTANEOUSLY, BUT AT STAGGERED INTERVALS. FOR INSTANCE, POWER WORKERS ARE DUE TO CALL A HALT AT 9 O'CLOCK TONIGHT, WHILE OTHER UNIONS WILL NOT STOP WORK UNTIL TOMORROW MORNING. THIS MEANS THAT THE STRIKE IS LIKELY TO CONTINUE UNTIL SATURDAY MORNING.

ALREADY, THE STRIKE HAS HAD ONE VICTIM. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN POST-WAR HISTORY, THE FRENCH NATIONAL ASSEMBLY WILL NOT MEET TOMORROW, BECAUSE OF TRANSPORT AND POWER DIFFICULTIES.

THE STRIKE HAS BEEN CALLED IN PROTEST AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT'S POLICY OF WAGE HOLD-DOWN. UNIONS WANT WAGES IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR BROUGHT IN LINE WITH THOSE PAID IN PRIVATE INDUSTRY.

MANY FIRMS AND EDUCATIONAL BODIES HAVE DECIDED TO CLOSE FOR THE DAY TOMORROW.
