  • Description

Construction work on a French oil pipeline stretching from the Sahara to the Algerian coast was filmed recently in the Algerian mountains.

The pipeline spanning a distance of about 300 miles is nearing completion. But the area shown on film is the most difficult section of the construction job - from a military rather than an engineering point of view. This is rebel territory.

While men and machines dig their way through the sand French troops are constantly on the alert against Algerian terrorists who have been fighting the French here for more than four years.

Oil was first discovered in the Sahara in 1956 - at Edjeleh near the Libyan border in June and further north at hassi Messaoud in December. Edjeleh now has 63 oil wells and is to be connected by pipeline with the Gulf of Gabes. Hassi Messaoud will soon deliver oil through the new 24-inch line to the Mediterranean port of Bougie. Development is rapidly progressing.
