  • Description

THE THIRD MOST IMPORTANT DISCOVERY IN THE HISTORY OF EGYPTOLOGY WAS MADE AT SAKARAH, IN UPPER EGYPT, U.A.R. RECENTLY. WHILE AN EXPEDITION OF THE EGYPT EXPLORATION SOCIETY, LED BY BRITISH PROFESSOR WALTER EMERY, WERE SEARCHING FOR THE TOMB OF THE GOD OF MEDICINE, I MHOTEP, THEY FOUND THE ROCK-HEWN VAULTED SERAPEUM TEMPLE OF THE GOD'S AT SAKARAH.

THIS DISCOVERY RANKS AS THE THIRD GREATEST AFTER TUTANKHAMEN AND THE SOLAR BOATS AT THE GREAT PYRAMID. THE TEMPLE HAD BEEN PLUNDERED BY TOMB ROBBERS, PROBABLY AT THE TIME OF THE EARLY CHRISTIAN ERA. THE ENTRANCE WAS, IN FACT, MADE THROUGH ONE OF THE ENTRANCE HOLES OF THE ANCIENT ROBBERS WHICH WORKMEN FOUND BY ACCIDENT.

THIS IS ONLY THE SECOND SERAPEUM TO BE FOUND. THE FIRST, DEDICATED TO APIS THE BULL, WAS UNCOVERED IN 1851 BY THE FAMOUS FRENCH EGYPTOLOGIST, AUGUST MARIETTE. IT IS EXPECTED THAT THE WORK OF CLEARING THE SAND FROM THE TEMPLE WILL TAKE ALMOST A YEAR.

PASSAGES 14 FT WIDE AND HIGH WITH WIDE GALLERIES FOR LIFESIZE SACRED ANIMALS WERE FOUND IN THE TEMPLE. DESPITE PLUNDERINGS THEY FOUND MORE THAN 200 INSCRIBED TABLETS AND A LARGE QUANTITY OF FINE BRONZE STATUES OF THE SUN GOD HORNS WITH JEWELLED EYES, TOGETHER WITH A BROKEN 65-TON SARCOPHAGUS.

IT IS HOPED THAT THIS DISCOVERY WILL, FOR THE FIRST TIME, TELL THE FULL STORY OF THE MYSTERIOUS CULT OF THE COW GODDESSES OF MEMPHIS.
