  • Description

Christmas came early this year for 200 disabled children living at the Dagerati Children's Centre in Nairobi.

On Monday (December 20) they celebrated Christmas with a giant party--and each child received a gift from Father Christmas.

The gifts were donated by BOAC, and the Rotary Club of Nairobi.

SYNOPSIS: Christmas is a time for children--but not all children will celebrate the day at home with their families. Some are in hospital--others in various children's homes. And this week they, like all other children, are enjoying the annual festivities. These disabled children live at the Dagerati Childrens Centre in capital of Kenya, Nairobi. Their Christmas started early this year--with a giant party on Monday that included a round of carols. For the singing, each child dressed up in a costume appropriate for the festive season.

There are 200 disabled children at this centre--which helps the disabled to make the most of their lives, despite their disabilities. The Christmas party provided the opportunity for the children to demonstrate that despite their misfortune--they can behave just like any others.

The warm, wet weather of a Nairobi Christmas makes Father Christmas sink his winter wear look a little incongruous. But for the children--no-one could have been more welcome. He brought with him the traditional good cheer--and sack full of gifts. The presents were all donated by the Rotary Club of Nairobi--and BOAC. For the children--this was the biggest day of the year. And with the presents opened, the carols sung--and the Christmas fare digested, there were many among the youngsters sorry that Christmas does indeed come but once a year.
