Background: INTRODUCTION: Egyptian President Anwar Sadat arrived in Bonn on Thursday (31 March) at the start of a tour of three western capitals to discuss Middle East peace prospects.
SYNOPSIS: Soon after his arrival in West Germany, President Sadat was driven to the Presidential Palace Garden in the capital to meet his counterpart, Federal President Walter Scheel. He was greeted with full military honours. The Egyptian leader, who enjoys warm relations with West Germany, was sure to be promised further development aid for his country. Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher said he planned to urge more economic aid for Egypt when he returned from a visit there is February.
President Sadat wants fresh concerted efforts to settle the Arab-Israeli dispute and favours an early resumption of the Geneva Middle East Peace Conference which last met in December 1973. During the ceremony at the Presidential Garden both Presidents reviewed the guard of honour. The U.S. Secretary of State Cyrus Vance flew into Bonn a few hours before Mr. Sadat on his way home from talks in Moscow. The Middle East problem had been on the Moscow agenda but Mr. Vance did not see the Egyptian leader in Bonn. Instead, President Sadat is due to fly to Paris on Saturday (2 April) before holding talks with Mr. Vance in Washington next week.
