  • Description

A NEW BUILD-UP OF UNITED STATES FORCES IN SOUTH VIETNAM BEGAN YESTERDAY MORNING (MONDAY) WHEN ABOUT A THOUSAND COMBAT INFANTRYMEN WERE LANDED AT CAM RANH BAY. THE INFANTRYMEN BRING THE TOTAL NUMBER OF AMERICAN SERVICEMEN IN THE COUNTRY TO WELL OVER 60,000.

THE ONE THOUSAND MEN WHO CAME ASHORE WERE THE FIRST REGULAR COMBAT INFANTRYMEN SENT TO VIETNAM BY THE UNITED STATES. THEY CAME ASHORE IN LANDING CRAFT FROM THE TROOP CARRIER U.S.S. GORDON. CAM RANH BAY IS A DEEP, NATURAL HARBOUR ABOUT 185 MILES (300 KILOMETRES) NORTH-EAST OF SAIGON. MORE INFANTRYMEN WILL BE LANDED AT OTHER POINTS ALONG THE COAST DURING THE NEXT FEW DAYS.

THE LANDING COINCIDED WITH A DRAMATIC STATEMENT FROM SOUTH VIETNAM'S PRIME MINISTER, AIR VICE MARSHALL NGUYEN CAO KY. HE SAID THAT HIS GOVERNMENT COULD NOT LOSE TO THE VIET CONG. "THE COMMUNIST REGULAR ARMY CANNOT POSSIBLY BEAT US ON THE FRONT LINE", HE SAID IN A SPEECH. "THE ARMED FORCES OF VIETNAM AND THOSE OF FRIENDLY NATIONS HAVE MORE THAN ENOUGH STRENGTH TO WIPE OUT EVERY COMMUNIST REGULAR UNIT."
