    Gymnasts from 21 nations competed in the two-day 3rd European Gymnastics Championships: opened Oct 17 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

    Among the 36 competitors in the opening parade were Russian and Czech athletes. Then the judges began their assessment of competitors giving displays at six different points in the arenas. They included Touche of France, Fivian of Switzerland, and Stuart of England on the vaulting horse.

    Titov of Russia, a strong favourite, won the title with 57.85 points. Stuart came fifth in the final placings with 55.25 points. Garcia Valbuena of Spain excelled on the rings but later he fell with a foot injury and retired.

    Last year's winner in Paris was Joachim Blume of Spain, who died later in an aircrash.
