Background: GRIPPED BY ITS ELEVENTH GENERAL STRIKE SO FAR THIS YEAR, ADEN WAS YESTERDAY DESERTED AND ALL SHOPS, OFFICES, PETROL STATIONS AND SCHOOLS REMAINED SHUT. THE STRIKE WAS CALLED BY BOTH NATIONALIST GROUPS -- NLF AND FLOSY. BUT WHILE THE NLF CALLED FOR UNITY BETWEEN THE GROUPS IN ITS STRIKE CALL, FLOSY DEMANDED MORE MILITARY ATTACKS ON THE BRITISH IN ADEN.

BRITISH SERVICE FAMILIES WERE ORDERED TO STAY INDOORS. DURING THE DURATION OF THE STRIKE AND BRITISH TROOPS PATROLLED THE EMPTY STREETS ON FOOT AND IN ARMOURED VEHICLES.

THREE SHOOTING AND GRENADE ATTACKS WERE MADE ON BRITISH TROOPS DURING THE STRIKE, BUT THERE WERE NO CASUALTIES.

THE STRIKE CAME ON THE EVE OF THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF CHANGE IN THE BRITISH ADMINISTRATION IN ADEN. IT WAS ANNOUNCED TODAY THAT SIR RICHARD TURNBULL, THE PRESENT BRITISH HIGH COMMISSIONER IN ADEN, IS TO BE REPLACED BY SIR HUMPHREY TREVELYAN, FORMER BRITISH ENVOY TO BAGHDAD, CAIRO AND DAMASCUS.

THE APPOINTMENT OF SIR HUMPHREY, AN EXPERIENCED NEGOTIATOR, IS TAKEN AS AN INDICATION THAT THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT STILL HOPES TO BRING THE CONFLICTING SIDES IN SOUTH ARABIA TOGETHER.
