  • Description

CARLOS ORTIZ, OF THE UNITED STATES, RETAINED HIS WORLD LIGHTWEIGHT CROWN BY KNOCKING OUT JAPANESE CHALLENGER TERUO KOSAKA IN THE FIFTH ROUND OF THEIR SCHEDULED 15-ROUND TITLE MATCH IN TOKYO THIS WEEK.

ORTIZ LANDED AN EXPLOSIVE RIGHT TO THE JAW THAT FLATTENED KOSAKA FOR THE FULL COUNT AT TWO MINUTES 32 SECONDS OF THE FIFTH. KOSAKA RARELY SEEMED TO HAVE A CHANCE AGAINST THE CHAMPION, WHO SCORED WITH FAST JABS FROM THE OPENING ROUND.

THE CHAMPION BLOODIED KOSAKA'S NOSE IN THE FOURTH, AND MADE HIS RIVAL'S KNEES BUCKLE WITH A FLURRY OF BODY BLOWS. BY THE FIFTH ROUND, THE COMPARATIVELY INEXPERIENCED JAPANESE FIGHTER WAS STILL ATTACKING BUT LOOKED VERY WORN.

ORTIZ WAITED HIS CHANCE AND THEN CONNECTED WITH HARD RIGHT TO THE JAW. KOSAKA WENT DOWN ON HIS BACK WITH HIS LEGS IN THE AIR AND FAILED TO BEAT THE COUNT.

IT WAS ORTIZ'S FIRST DEFENCE OF HIS CROWN TITLE SINCE HE WON IT FROM AMERICAN JOE BROWN LAST APRIL, AND THE FIRST LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE FIGHT STAGED IN TOKYO.
