    MORE UNITED STATES TROOPS HAVE BEEN REQUESTED FOR DUTY IN SOUTH VIETNAM. THIS IS THE OUTCOME OF TALKS BETWEEN SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT LEADERS AND THE UNITED STATES DEFENCE SECRETARY, MR. ROBERT MCNAMARA, WHO IS IN SAIGON.

    THE TALKS TOOK PLACE AT AIR MARSHAL KY'S RESIDENCE ON FRIDAY SOON AFTER MR. MCNAMARA ARRIVED FROM WASHINGTON FOR A FIVE DAY VISIT. HE WAS ACCOMPANIED BY MR. CABOT LODGE, SOON TO TAKE OVER HIS OLD POST AS THE AMERICAN AMBASSADOR. THE MEETING LASTED 90 MINUTES.

    AT PRESENT, UNITED STATES FORCES IN SOUTH VIETNAM NUMBER ABOUT 80,000. IT IS UNDERSTOOD THAT MILITARY LEADERS WANT THEM DOUBLED BY THE END OF THE YEAR. NO DECISION ON ANY EXTRA COMMITMENT WILL BE MADE BEFORE MR. MCNAMARA RETURNS TO WASHINGTON THIS WEEK.

    TIGHT SECURITY MEASURES ARE SURROUNDING HIS VISIT. DURING HIS PREVIOUS TRIP, IN MAY LAST YEAR, HE WAS THE INTENDED VICTIM OF AN UNSUCCESSFUL BOMB PLOT.
