    South Vietnamese Marines have staged a successful amphibious operation north of Hue, behind Communist lines in the coastal region overrun by North Vietnamese troops following the fall of Quang Tri. The assault groups was carried up the coast by an American landing ship, transferred to amphibious tractors and put ashore in face of sporadic artillery fire.

    The marines quickly secured beach head. Air strikes were called in to suppress North Vietnamese small arms fire, which caused a number of casualties. Villagers found hiding in the neighbourhood were rounded up and sent southwards to safety in a fleet of sampans. The Marines pressed inland to link up with another force attacking across the nearby. My Chanh river. The force ended its offensive sweep and returned to the South Vietnamese lines after an action lasting 20 hours. Government spokesmen claimed to have killed more than 200 communists, for the loss of only 5 dead and 16 wounded.
