President Charles de Gaulle was filmed June 7 by Visnews on the last day of a three-day tour of Central France. His itinerary: Church at Clermont-Ferrand; then on to visit the industrial centres of Roanne, Firminy and St. Chamond.
At Clermont-Ferrand, De Gaulle attended mass with his wife at the church "Notre Dame du Port".
On arrival at Roanne, President De Gaulle spoke to a gathering from the steps of the Town Hall.
At St. Etienne, he was greeted by music of the two military bands stationed nearby. He was accompanied by M. Antoine Pinay, minister of Finance.
Next stop: Firminy, where de Gaulle was met by M. Claudius Petit, the Mayor. Local miners in their work clothes, lined the steps of the Town Hall, as the President entered. Inside he was shown a model of Firminy's building project "Firminy Vert".
Returning to St. Etienne, the President walked past a line of miners and students of the National School of Mines to enter the Town Hall. Then he was handed a wreath in the form of the Cross of Lorraine by ex-servicemen of both world wars, which he placed on the plaque commemorating the war dead.
On to St. Chamond where the President spoke to the crowds in the municipal park.
