Background: AN IDEA FROM A DONALD DUCK CARTOON HAS HELPED SALVAGE A SHIP IN KUWAIT HARBOUR - AND HELPED TO SAVE THE SHEIKHDOM'S WATER SUPPLY FROM CONTAMINATION. THE SHIP - THE MOTOR VESSEL AL KUWAIT - HAD OVERTURNED IN THE HARBOUR, DROWNING THE 5,000 SHEEP ON BOARD. AS KUWAIT'S WATER SUPPLY COMES FROM THE HARBOUR, THERE WAS THE RISK OF INFECTION. BUT THE DANGER HAS BEEN AVERTED THROUGH A NEW AND SPEEDY METHOD OF SALVAGING SHIPS: THE USE OF PLASTIC FOAM, WHICH CONTAINS 70 PER CENT OXYGEN.

THIS SALVAGING METHOD IS THE WORK OF A DANE, MR. KARL KRYGER. HIS IDEA CAME FROM A CARTOON SHOWING DONALD DUCK USING A SIMILAR PRINCIPLE TO SALVAGE A SHIP. THE AL KUWAIT - WHICH OVERTURNED ON SEPTEMBER 14 - GAVE HIM THE CHANCE TO EXPERIMENT. THE JOB TOOK JUST TWO MONTHS, COSTING HALF THE NORMAL SALVAGE FEE. NOW MR. KRYGER IS LOOKING FOR BIGGER SALVAGE JOBS.

AND A STATISTICAL NOTE: ALL THAT PLASTIC FOAM CONTAINED AN ESTIMATED 27-MILLION AIR BUBBLES.
