  • Description

Sir Anthony Eden -- British Prime Minister at the time of the 1956 Suez Crisis -- flew out from London Airport, December 17, with his wife, Lady Eden, to winter in the West Indies.

The 62-year-old former Premier, who resigned three years ago as leader of the Conservative party because of "ill-health", looked pale and drawn after his recent illnesses. He told reporters he was feeling much better. "I have had several days recently with fevers. They are rather like malaria in effect and I should be better in the West Indies than I am here".

He is taking four months holiday and plans to spend a few days with the Governor General in Trinidad. Afterwards, the Edens will stay in St. Vincent for six weeks where they have taken a small house - and spend a further six weeks in Antigua.

Asked whether his book, due for publication, February 29, was controversial, Sir Anthony replied: "All good history is controversial". This volume of his memoirs - "Full Circle" - deals with the years 1951-57 - four years as Foreign Secretary and two as Prime Minister, covering the "Suez Affair".

The night he left London - Canadian Television broadcast an interview with Sir Anthony, filmed earlier at his Wiltshire home. Making his first major pronouncement on world affairs since his resignation, he said the forthcoming Summit negotiate must distinguish between "appeasement and peace". The interview dealt mainly with Sues and Sir Anthony's policy of intervention in Egypt - a step bitterly criticized and the subsequent downfall of his political career. Supporting his stand, Sir Anthony said Britain and France had been "through this kind of thing before and international agreement being torn up and the consequences that followed from it". The Anglo-French intervention accompli two major objectives - the establishment of an international police force in the Middle East and localization of the Israeli-Egyptian fighting.
