  • Description

Syngman Rhee, former President of South Korea, arrived in Hawaii, May 29, with his Austrian born wife, to start a term of exile that may be broken if the new Korean Government demands his return for the investigations into his term of office.

At the airport to greet him was the Korean Consul General B.Y. Choy and President of the Korean Association, Dong Ji Hoy, who was also his host. At a comfortable beach house the Korean statesman rested in the sun while in Seoul the National Assembly attacked the new Government for allowing the former President to leave the country.

One of the arguments used in the debate was that Rhee had been for years "salting away millions of dollars of American aid money for his own personal use". the caretaker Government was told they were allowing Rhee to get away with twelve years of misrule.

Replying, President Huh Chung told the National Assembly that he could see no reason for refusing "this unfortunate old man" a passport. He said Korea could depend on the cooperation of the United States if the Government decided to press charges against the former President.
