  • Description

The final stage of London's underground railway link to Heathrow Airport is receiving last-minute attention before its official opening by Queen Elizabeth on December the 16th. At a cost of 30 million pounds sterling (about 54 million U.S. dollars), the ??? Line extension has taken over six and a half years to complete.

SYNOPSIS: The first stage to Hatton Cross was opened in July, 1975. Since then the Tube has been pushed one-and-a-half miles to Heathrow Central for an historic link with London's major airport. This development makes Heathrow the first main airport in the world to be directly integrated into the underground system of a large city.

With the opening of Heathrow Central Station travellers arriving at the airport will be within 40 minutes of ??? Circus, in the heart of London's West End. It is anticipated that some 12 million people a year will use the new link. With tourism in mind, London Transport has installed a full range of multi-lingual information displays.

London Transport has bought 88 new trains for the new service. Costing over 41 million pounds sterling (74 million U.S. dollars the trains are specially designed to give more room for baggage and will run every four minutes during Monday to Friday peak hours.

At present Heathrow Central must be the cleanest station in London. With the opening so close the staff are making sure that nothing but official posters greet the eye of the royal visitor. The only hitch is the possibility of stationary escalators. With engineers still on strike there is no guarantee that the moving stairs will be working.

However the rest of the station' equipment is functioning perfectly and represents the best in sophisticated traffic systems. Train movements in and out of the station will be controlled by computer, which together with closed circuit television, will give the fullest possible information to the line controller.

And the final convenience-Heathrow Central is linked by moving walkway to the airport's three terminal buildings.
