  • Description

The day following his arrival in Kenya for a two-week tour, Lord Mountbatten, Chief of British Defence Staff, inspected the GBP30 million Kahawa 'strategic base' September 22, and then went on to visit the Royal Air Force station on Eastleigh.

Conducted by Sir Nigel Tapp, General-Officer-Commanding, Lord Mountbatten began his inspection at Kahawa with a look at construction planes for the new military base, the first stage of which is due for completion early 1961. The base is intended to accommodate a 'strategic reserve', responsible over a wide area in Africa and parts of the middle and Far East.

AT Eastleigh, Lord Mountbatten inspected various RAF units stationed there, and was then entertained by a fly-past and demonstration of aerobatics by 'Hunter' jet-fighters. More than 30 'Beverley' transport aircraft are reported to be stationed at Eastleigh. These will be used to transport the 'strategic reserve' to wherever and whenever it should be needed.

At a Nairobi press conference September 25, Lord Mountbatten said he had come to Kenya "with no nuclear bases up my sleeve". He said the main object of his visit was to visit British military installations to get an on-the-spot idea of their problems. He added: "I should like to state that I am not here to deal with political problems." After Kenya Lord Mountbatten will go on to pay a seven-day visit to the Rhodesian Federation. On October 11, he and his daughter, Lady Brabourne, will fly to Zanzibar.
