  • Description

What must have been one of the final chapters in the history of the United State West took place in Yosemite National Park on Saturday (18 October).

It was the last big round-up .. when the horses of Yosemite were driven to Mariposa for winter grazing.

The round-up has taken place every year from 1875, but time and an environmental ruling made Saturday's horse drive the last one.

The 300 horses, used as park rentals, used to be allowed to pasture in the Winoona Meadow before being driven to lower elevation. Now because the park authorities have decided to enforce their no grazing ordinance, the horses will be trucked to and from their winter pastures.

The annual drives used to cover 30 miles of hills and highways and was handled by about 25 wranglers.
