    THIRTY-FOUR YACHTS LEFT THE PORT OF PLYMOUTH COMPETITIVE SOLO VOYAGE IN THE WORLD - THE TRANSATLANTIC YACHT RACE. THE YACHTS RANGING FROM A 65 FT LONG (19.8 METRE) KETCH TO A 26 FT LONG (8 METRES) CUTTER, WILL RACE 3,000 MILES (4.800 KMS) TO NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND, IN THE UNITED STATES.

    THE YACHTSMEN HAVE THE CHOICE OF FIVE POSSIBLE ROUTES RANGING FROM A NORTHERLY ONE, WHICH IS HELPED BY THE LABRADOR CURRENT, TO ONE WHICH WOULD PASS SOUTH WEST OF THE CANARY ISLANDS. THE FAVOURITE TO WIN THE RACE IS FRENCHMAN, ERIC TABARLY, WHO IS SAILING THE BIG TRIMARAN - PEN DUICK IV. TABARLY WON THE RACE IN THE RECORD TIME OF 27 DAYS WHEN IT WAS LAST HELD IN 1964. THE FIRST RACE - HELD IN 1960 - WAS WON BY BRITAIN'S SIR FRANCIS CHICHESTER.

    THE TRANSATLANTIC RACE IS SPONSORED BY THE BRITISH WEEKLY NEWSPAPER," THE OBSERVER." COUNTRIES REPRESENTED IN THIS YEAR'S RACE ARE; FRANCE, SOUTH AFRICA, SWEDEN, U.K., U.S.A., ITALY, AUSTRALIA, WEST GERMANY AND SWITZERLAND.

    SYNOPSIS
    THE LONGEST COMPETITIVE SOLO VOYAGE IN THE WORLD - THE TRANSATLANTIC YACHT RACE - STARTED FROM PLYMOUTH IN SOUTHERN ENGLAND ON SATURDAY. THIRTY-FOUR YACHTSMAN FROM EUROPE, THE UNITED STATES, AUSTRALIA AND SOUTH AFRICA ARE WELL ON THEIR OWN NOW AS THEY BATTLE TO BE FIRST TO REACH NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND, IN THE UNITED STATES.

    THE YACHTS, RANGING FROM A 65 FT (19.8 METRE) KETCH TO A 26 FT (8 METRE) CUTTER, HAVE THREE THOUSAND MILES (4,800 KMS) TO TRAVEL. THEIR SKIPPERS HAVE THE CHOICE OF FIVE POSSIBLE ROUTES. THEY CAN TAKE A VERY NORTHERLY ONE, WHICH HAS THE ADVANTAGE OF THE LABRADOR CURRENT BUT THE PERIL OF ICEBERGS, OR A SOUTHERLY ROUTE WHICH WOULD TAKE THEM NEAR THE CANARY ISLANDS.

    THE FIRST TRANSATLANTIC RACE WAS HELD IN 1960 AND IT WAS WON BY BRITAIN'S SIR FRANCIS CHICESTER. HE TOOK 40 DAYS BUT THE WINNER OF THE 1964 RACE, FRENCHMAN ERIC TABARLY, FINISHED IN ONLY 27 DAYS. TABARLY IS THE FAVOURITE TO WIN AGAIN THIS YEAR BUT THERE'S A LONG WAY TO GO YET.
