  • Description

Guillermo Vilas of Argentina crowed a great season of Commercial Union Grand Prix tennis by defeating Rumanian lIie Nastase for the Masters title in Melbourne, Australia, on Sunday (15 December).

In a gruelling three-hour match the 22-year old South American produced some fine play to beat the four-times Masters winner in five sets: 7-6, 6-2 3-6, 3-6, 6-4. Last month he won the Commercial Union Grand Prix tournament by amassing more points than any other player in first-class tennis during the 1974 season.

To reach the final, Vilas had already defeated top names such as Australian John Newcombe -- playing on home ground -- and Sweden's Bjorn Brog. In the first set, though, it seemed that Nastase was in form to win. But, despite dropping his service-game twice, the South American managed to force the set to a tie-breaker, which he won.

Well on top through the second set, Vilas seemed to falter in the Australian heat (125??? Farenheit), and went down in the third and fourth sets to some magnificent play from the Rumanian. In the fifth and final set, however, Vilas came back and broke Nastase's service twice to win the set and match.

The 40,000 US dollars (17,290 pounds sterling) prize money brings up Vilas's purse for the season to over 260, 000 US dollars (115, 000 pounds sterling). His win in Melbourne makes him one of the brightest hopes in top-class tennis for 1975.
