SCU Lord Provost, J.M. McGrigor: speaks:-
"Your Majesty I am honoured to state that we receive you with pride of heart and soul. We are deeply conscious of the great honour done to us & to all Scotland in your acceptance of the freedom of the Council of the Highlands." (APPLAUSE) GV... Your Majesty comes to Inverness to-day & honours us by accepting the freedom of her Royal borough which for more than 10 centuries has been an example of that loyalty, courage & fidelity for which Scotland stands."
SV Queen Mother repeats after Provost the oath:-
"I Elizabeth, do solemnly and sincerely promise & declare that I will faithfully .. burgess of the Royal Borough of Inverness."
SCU Queen speaks:-
"I am very grateful for your kind welcome to-day and for your thought in extending to me the freedom of this ancient borough. I am deeply touched by your wish that I should become a burgess of Inverness, and I am indeed proud of the honour you are doing me."
CU... I am glad to think that I am sharing the distinction which you have conferred upon me today with the Queen's Own Cameroon Highlanders, (applause) who have so long brought fame to the place from where so many of them have set forth. To all of them, and to tell the citizens & people of this Royal Borough I give my good wishes & my sincere thanks. May good fortune attend them & may prosperity & fame over dwell in Inverness." (applause)
SCU... The fame of the Cameroon Highlanders is known to all whose home is in Inverness-shire & to countless others far beyond the regiment's native land. And there are only two things I would like to say, one is to convey the message of comradeship, congratulations & goodwill from all ranks of the Black Watch whose Colonel-in-Chief I am." (applause)
SCU Queen Mother continues:-
"That the honour which you have conferred upon me to-day is enhanced by the thought that I share this with the regiment for which I have ling has a very high regards, and for which I shall now feel a very special association and affection." (applause)
