  • Description

Acting Cyprus President Glafkos Clerides met Archbishop Makarios for the first time since the coup in Cyprus for talks on the future and general situation in Cyprus on Thursday (21 November) at a London hotel.

A Cyprus High Commission spokesman said there was absolute co-operation at the meeting which was held in a "very cordial atmosphere."
Their discussion was expected to have an important bearing on the political future of Cyprus.

The Archbishop and Mr. Clerides are preparing for important talks to be held in Athens next week with the new Government of Greece under Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis.

Thursday's meeting lasted longer than originally planned. An earlier arrangement for Mr. Clerides to call on British Foreign Secretary James Callaghan was cancelled.

Mr. Clerides and Archbishop Makarios are now expected to meet Mr. Callaghan together on Friday (22 November). Originally the Archbishop was to have called on Mr. Callaghan on Friday by himself.
