Background: On Tuesday (29 April) -- the last day of Italian Foreign Minister Mariano Rumor's visit to Egypt -- he travelled to the village of Mit Abul Kom for a meeting with President Anwar Sadat.

The Egyptian President received Signor Rumor and the Italian delegation at his holiday house; Mit Abul Kom is his home village.

After the meeting, Egypt and Italy issued a joint communique, in which they insisted that a peaceful Middle East settlement should include complete Israeli withdrawal from occupied Arab territories and a national home for the Palestinians.

The two countries also agreed that careful preparations were required before the resumption of the Geneva Peace Conference on the Middle East.

The communique said the two countries noted with satisfaction the possibility of an early meeting in Cairo of west European and Arab experts to promote an Arab-European dialogue.
