  • Description

On Friday (19 September), President Marien Ngouabi of the Congo, made a brief refuelling stop in Abidjan, capital of the Ivory Coast, as he returned home from visits to Cuba and Yugoslavia.

He was met at the airport by Ivory Coast Minister of State Auguste Denise. During their brief visit, the two men are said to have discussed world problems as well as the question of bilateral relations and the problems in angola.

President Ngouabi had spent the previous night in Conakry, the capital of Guinea. There he met and spoke with President Sekou Toure. The Angolan problem was an important part of their discussions. The Congo provides a base for the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), one of the three squabbling Angolan liberation groups.

In Conakry, President Ngouabi defended his country's role in supporting the MPLA by saying he believed the MPLA to be a popular and progressive movement. But he did call for the unification of all the liberation groups into a "common anti-imperialist front".

He said backing the MPLA did not create a division in Angola.

President Ngouabi was only in Abidjan a short time while his plane was refuelling before he continued on to Brazzaville, capital of the Congo.
