  • Description

Thousands of demonstrators turned out in the streets of Madras in India on Wednesday (24 August) to demonstrate their support for the Tamil minority in Sri Lanka. Violence has claimed 54 lives in Sri Lanka in recent days and the trouble has been mainly directed against the island's 2.5 million Tamil minority.

SYNOPSIS: Madras is one of the key Indian areas for the Tamil and many shops and offices in the city were closed for the day of the demonstration. It was organised by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (D.M.K.) political party, which is aiming at an autonomous state for the Tamils.

The D.M.K.'s leader, Mr. M. Karuanidhi, and other party officials took part in the rally, which ended at the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commissioners Office.

There riot police were on hand in case of trouble, but no incidents were reported. Mr Karunanidhi and the other leaders were allowed into the offices to present a petition. It expressed their sympathy for the Sri Lankan Tamils.

In Sri Lanka a mass resettlement of some of the Tamils is underway in an attempt to solve the tension.
