  • Description

King Jigme Singhi Wangchuk of Bhutan -- making his first official tour since he came to the throne -- arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday (18 December) at the start of a 10-day visit.

The 19-year-old monarch received a full ceremonial welcome from India's President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and members of the Cabinet.

The King inspected a guard of honour at the airport and was introduced to foreign diplomats, including one from China. Bhutan, like the other Himalayan kingdoms of Nepal and Sikkim, has long been part of a strategic buffer zone between India and Chinese-ruled Tibet.

King Jigme Singhi Wangchuk was scheduled to have talks with Indian leaders about economic assistance to his country. A treaty signed in 1949 still provides for political and economic links between the two counties. In addition, Bhutan has relief on India for guidance in foreign relations.
