The meeting with the President, I think it is preferable that I give Minister Sharon the opportunity to speak about, thank you."

I had the merit to be received by President Mubarak for the very thoughtful meeting, a very friendly and warm atmosphere and I was very pleased and encouraged to hear that Egypt, like Israel, is committed to the Camp David Accord and both parts see, both countries that the Camp David Accord, that is the way for a comprehensive peace in the Middle East, thank you."

Background: Israel's Defence Minister Ariel Sharon met Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo on Tuesday (19 January) to discuss the final withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Sinai Peninsula next April. The hour long meeting at the Presidential Palace was the first between an Israeli Cabinet Minister and Mr. Mubarak since he became President following the assassination of President Anwar Sadat last October. There was a final session of talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Kamal Hassal Ali at which the two sides said they would finalise details of the withdrawal. Both sides say they have resolved the main issues including dismantling Israeli settlements and compensation for various installations. After Tuesday's meeting Mr. Ali and Mr. Sharon met the press.
