    Sport, and in Czechoslovakia, East Germany continued on its gold-winning ways on the fifth day of the European Athletics Championships. Johanna Klier of East Germany won the Women's 100 metres hurdles, but Tatyanna Zelensova of the Soviet Union chopped nearly half a second off her own world record when she won the women's 400 metres hurdles. The prestige men's 5,000 metres final was won after a close finish by the Italian Venanzio Ortis.

    SYNOPSIS: In the women's 400 metres hurdles the girl to watch is Tatyana Zelenseva of the Soviet Union in lane four. She has hold the world record for this event since mid-August when she won it from her rival Krystyna Kaoporozyk of Poland -- running in lane two -- after she had hold it for just one day. Kaoporozyk made a strong showing in the early stages, but as the field swung into the straight Silvia Hollmann of West Germany looked liberty.

    This event is new to the European Championships and there was ??? competition for the gold. Hollmann could not hold the clear lead she had established, and the world record holder ??? made her customary late run to win the first over European championship.

    Zelensova's time of 54.89 seconds was nearly half a second under her own world mark.

    The women's 100 metres hurdles final featured the Olympic champion Jehanna Klier of East Germany. She leapt to the lead but was hand pressed by Tatyana Antisimova and with her Nina Margulina, bath of the Soviet Union. The champion ??? won, followed by Anisimova and Gudrung Berland of East Germany.

    In the prestigious mon's 5,000 metres final, the leaders were still bunched with only half a lap to go. The first four were Martti Vainio of Finland, Markus ryffel of Switzerland, Ilio Florin of Rumania and Vonansio Ortis of Italy. In the fierce finish, Ortis was boxed in but a gap allowed him to dash to the front in time to break the winner's tape.

    Ortis was jubilant. He had already won silver in the 10,000 metres event.
