    America's latest deadly piece of armament, the nuclear-powered USS Submarine 100 million dollar 'George Washington', was launched by Treasury Secretary's wife, Mrs. Robert B. Anderson, at Groton, Connecticut, USA, June 9.

    Tenth US nuclear submarine to be launched in five years, the 5,400 ton 'George Washington' can fire its destructive load from the below the surface.

    It will be skippered by Cmdr. James B. Osborn, Veteran of World War Two and a missile expert.

    This craft went into the Thames River from the same slipway as tow of its history-making predecessors, the 'Nautilus' and 'Skate'.

    This is America's first 'Polaris' missile submarine, of which President Eisenhower said in a message read at the launching, "It is my prayerful hope that this ship will be always ready but never used...it will add greatly to our ability to preserve the peace."
