Background: Hurricane Donna left its mark on Cuba. Palm trees bent as they were lashed by fierce gales at the fringe of northward-moving Donna. Damage to property was widespread but there are no reports of people being killed.

A Greek ship, the "Falcon", loading sugar at La Isabela, Las Villas Province, was scuttled by her captain for safety as Donna approached. The ship was afterwards resting firmly on the sea bed.

As calmer weather returned, the Japanese ship "Toko Maru" returned Sept 9 to Havana harbour, which it left the day before to weather the storm at sea.

Donna - now no more than a grim memory - left a trail of 135 deaths, with scores of people missing, and damage estimated at GBP357 million during a week of havoc.
