  • Description

About 300 cars and buses carrying young Socialists and others protesting against foreign intervention in the Vietnam war drove from West Germany along the autobahn through East Germany into West Berlin today (Saturday) for a Congress in the main auditorium of the city's Technical University. Later, a spokesman for the Socialist Students of Germany (SDS), which organised the Congress, said that delays by the East German authorities at the Marienborn checkpoint had prevented the impressive convoy of vehicles into West Berlin that had been intended.

The SDS spokesman said non-German visitors, including some young Communists from France, had to wait up to four hours for passport checks at Marienborn and the vehicles had to travel separately down the 110 mile (176 km) autobahn to West Berlin. Eventually about 3,000 young Socialists took part in the one-day Congress at the University. Some 42 of them, including Peter Brandt, the son of West German Foreign Minister Willy Brandt, were arrested for distributing leaflets calling for a demonstration -- which police have already banned -- in West Berlin tomorrow against the Vietnam war.
