SHARIF: "Sadat's treacherous act is considered as a personal isolated step that has not served the interests of the Arab masses in Egypt or the Arab Palestinian masses or the Arab masses in general. We would not stand by watching what is going on. We will step up our operations to prove to the whole world that there will be no solution, no ceasefire unless the Palestinian problem is solved on a just basis. The only just solution that we will accept is that they give the Palestinian people their full legitimate rights to go back to their homeland Palestine, and the right for self-determination to establish their democratic state together with the Jews living in Palestine now."

Background: The Popular Front for the Liberation Of Palestine has come out strongly against President Sadat's visit to Israel, and is threatening to step up operations in the Middle East. At a time when the Libyan Jamahiriyah is calling for a meeting next week of hard-line Arab leaders in either Tripoli or Algiers, the PFLP has completely dissociated itself from the Egyptian leader's peace mission. Speaking in Beirut on Tuesday (22 November) PELP spokesman Bassam Abu Sharif said that the visit to Israel was an act of treachery that had in no way served the interests of the Arab people.
