    THE COMMANDER OF THE TRAINING SQUADRON OF THE JAPANESE MARITIME DEFENCE FORCE, REAR ADMIRAL TETSURO MOTOMURA, SAID IN SYDNEY TODAY THAT THERE WAS SOME CONFLICT IN JAPAN AS WHETHER THE JAPANESE DEFENCE FORCES SHOULD BE EXPANDED.

    HE SAID THAT PRESSURES FOR EXPANSION OF THESE FORCES WERE OPPOSED BY THOSE WHO REARED A GROWTH OF MILITARISM.

    THE TRAINING SQUADROM, WHICH CONSISTS OF FOUR DESTROYERS, BERTHED AT GARDEN ISLAND DOCKYARD TODAY.

    REAR ADMIRAL MOTOMURA SAID THAT THE MAIN PURPOSE OF THE TRIP WAS TO ASSIST IN THE TRAINING OF ABOUT 160 NEWLY COMMISSIONED OFFICERS.

    THE SHIPS WERE WELCOMED AT GARDEN ISLAND BY ABOUT 50 CHILDREN FROM THE JAPANESE SCHOOL AT LINDFIELD.

    THE JAPANESE CONSUL GENERAL, MR SEIZO TANETANI, OFFICIALLY WELCOMED THE SQUADRON, AND HIS DAUGHTER, YEUKO, AGED 10 , PRESENTED A BOUQUET OF FLOWERS TO REAR ADMIRAL MOTOMURA.

    THE SQUADRON FLAGSHIPS, THE TERUZUKI FIRED A SALUTE AS IT PASSED THROUGH SYDNEY HEADS, WHICH WAS RETURNED BY ARMY ARTILLERY ON NORTH HEAD.

    THE SQUADRON WILL LEAVE SYDNEY ON SATURDAY, TO VISIT MELBOURNE AND FREEMANTLE.
