  • Description

Three thousand riot police accompanied by trench diggers and bulldozers, have overrun most of the strongholds put up by farmers at the site of Tokyo's second airport. The police moved in early on Friday morning (March 5) smashing their way through the protesters' barricades. At least 127 police and officials were injured and 65 arrests were made.

For 11 days the farmers and students had been resisting attempts to take control of the piece of land needed to complete the main runway. They hurled barrages of petrol bombs and stones from behind makeshift barricades.

But although police overran most of the seven remaining fortifications, on Friday and Saturday a handful of determined farmers moved underground into makeshift tunnels to continue their resistance. On Saturday night police withdrew to regroup for a final mopping-up operation.
