  • Description

The growing trend toward multi-racial sport in South Africa has been underlined further by this week's (30 March) cricket series between the South African Invitation X1 and England's Robins team at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town.

Both teams featured black members -- and South Africa's Habane, in particular turned in an outstanding performance. One of the matches' emotional highlights came when scores of white spectators rushed on to the field after the third match to congratulate Habane when he bowled out England's Jenner. One of the white spectators hoisted Habane on to his shoulders and carried him triumphantly of the field.

Shepherd, for England, was equally effective, bowling out Habane twice in the fourth match on Tuesday (1 April).

Over-all, however, the South Africans proved too strong for England. As England's Brian Close put it: "We had the worst of the wicket and things went wrong for us from the start when we lost the toss. But, let's face it, Eddie Barlow's team played darn good cricket."
