  • Description

STARTERS IN THE MONTE CARLO RALLY IN PARIS AND ATHENS FACED COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CONDITIONS WHEN THEY LEFT START LINES IN THE TWO CAPITALS.

IN PARIS THE WEATHER WAS COLD AND DRY FOR THE 68 STARTERS, AND EXCEPT FOR ISOLATED PATCHES ON HIGH GROUND IN THE ALPS, NO SNOW WAS REPORTED ON THE ROADS OF FRANCE.

ATHENS, HOWEVER, HAD THE HEAVIEST SNOWFALL IN 25 YEARS TO MAKE CONDITIONS EXTREMELY ARDUOUS FOR THE TEN CREWS. ROADS ARE SAID TO BE VERY DANGEROUS, AND GREEK MOTORING ORGANISATIONS HAVE PROMISED TO TRY TO KEEP THEM CLEAR UNTIL THE RALLY CARS HAVE GONE THROUGH. BAD WEATHER HIT THE ATHENS CONTINGENT LAST YEAR WHEN NONE OF THE STARTERS MANAGED TO REACH MONTE CARLO.

AHEAD OF THE RALLY MOTORISTS IS A DAY AND NIGHT DRIVE OVER 2,900 MILES (4,600 KILOMETRES) OF DANGEROUS ROADS AND MOUNTAIN PASSES ENDING FOR THE SURVIVORS WITH ARRIVAL IN MONTE CARLO ON TUESDAY.
