  • Description

HUNDREDS OF MADRID UNIVERSITY STUDENTS YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) BURNED NEWSPAPERS AND STONED POLICE VEHICLES IN THE THIRD SUCCESSIVE DAY OF CAMPUS RIOTS.

THE STUDENTS BURNED NEWSPAPERS AFTER A MASS MEETING. THEY WERE PROTESTING AGAINST REPORTS OF THIS WEEK'S DISTURBANCES WHICH APPEARED IN THE SPANISH PRESS.

DOZENS OF POLICE ON FOOT AND HORSEBACK LISTENED FROM A DISTANCE, BUT DID NOT CHARGE THE STUDENTS. A POLICE WATER TANKER MOVED FORWARD UNDER A HAIL OF STONES TO SPRAY BLUE DYE ON THE STUDENTS, WHO SCATTERED WHEN POLICE BEGAN TO ADVANCE.

TROUBLE STARTED LAST THURSDAY (NOVEMBER 30) WHEN STUDENTS FOUND THE SCIENCE FACULTY STUDENTS UNION OFFICES HAD BEEN DESTROYED. THEY CLAIMED IT HAD BEEN DONE BY ORDER OF THE DEAN OF THE FACULTY, AND THE UNIVERSITY WAS SHUT DOWN FOR TWO DAYS FOLLOWING THE SUBSEQUENT DISTURBANCES. WHEN IT RE-OPENED ON MONDAY (DECEMBER 4) STUDENTS AGAIN BEGAN DEMONSTRATING AND THOUSANDS WENT ON STRIKE TO PROTEST AT ARRESTS AND POLICE ACTION ON THE CAMPUS.
