Background: In Saigon, South Vietnam, on Friday (6 September) a large crowd watched as Government officials burnt herein valued at more than GBP 180,000 (460,000 US dollars). It was the second public drug burning ceremony in Saigon in the just over a year.
The herein was burnt in front of City Hall, and South Vietnamese Customs officers and medical experts inspected the drugs before they were set alight. Medals and cash awards were also presented to the Customs officers responsible for the drug raids.
The Customs Director-General, Colonel Nguyen Phi Phung, told the crowd that during the last four years 680 pounds (313 kilograms) of smuggled herein had been seized by his department.
On Friday, the herein haul weighed 290 pounds (132 kg). In July last year, when the last public burning was held, 220 pounds (100kg) went up in smoke.
