  • Description

The dispute between France and Tunisia shows no signs of lessening. Tunisian girls are now taking a part in their country's defence. Armed girls, members of the national guard, stand duty beside barricades, one such situated on a road to Hammamet, at Bou-Ficha.

At Kassarene, an old French garrison town, Tunisian troops are stationed.

But one of the more distressing results of the Franco - Tunisian dispute is the condition of thousands of Algerian refugees who have been forced to flee into Tunisia after the creation of the no-mans land on the Algerian - Tunisian border.

Many of these unfortunates have found their way into the Sbeitla region and are living in unspeakable conditions in the open and in caves - some are mere holes in the rocky terrain.

Many are sick and wounded and the Tunisian authorities are doing what they can to alleviate the suffering, under the aegis of the Ministry of Health.

Drinking water is brought up to the refugees in the Sbeitla region. Tents are being set up and blankets and clothing provided as an interim measure.
