    THIS IS SINGAPORE.....EXACTLY TWENTY FIVE YEARS AFTER THE BRITISH SURRENDER THE ISLAND BASE TO THE JAPANESE. TODAY DAY WAS MARKED BY THE CEREMONIAL UNVEILING BY PRIME MINISTER LEE KUAN YEW OF A MEMORIAL DEDICATED TO THE CIVILIAN DEAD. IN THE VAULT OF THE MONUMENT ARE 160 URNS CONTAINING THE REMAINS OF SOME OF THE THOUSANDS KILLED BY THE JAPANESE DURING THEIR THREE YEAR OCCUPATION OF THE ISLAND. THEY WERE DUG OUT FROM MASS GRAVES FOUND THROUGHOUT THE ISLAND. SINGAPORE CHINESE CLAIM MORE THAN FIFTY THOUSAND CHINESE WERE MASSACRED BY THE JAPANESE.

    MANY VISIBLE SIGNS OF THE JAPANESE OCCUPATIO STILL REMAIN. THE YMCA BUILDING WAS SEIZED BY THE JAPANESE AND USED AS THEIR SECRET SERVICE HEADQUARTERS. AFTER THE JAPANESE LEFT IT WAS RENOVATED AND TURNED ONCE AGAIN INTO YMCA HEADQUARTERS.

    ALONG THE BEACHES GUN EMPLACEMENTS ARE STILL TO BE FOUND, SOME INTACT OTHERS OVERGROWN WITH GRASS AND SHATTERED. THOSE WHO WERE IN SINGAPORE AT THE FALL SINGAPORE MAKE IT A POINT TO SEE THEM WHEN THEY RETURN AS TOURISTS.

    AFTER THE JAPANESE SURRENDER, THE BRITISH AS A TRIBUTE TO THE GALLANTRY OF THE MALAY REGIMENT WHICH MADE ITS LAST STAND AGAINST THE JAPANESE BUILT A MOSQUE ON THE SAME HILL THAT SAW A LAST BITTER BATTLE.

    FIVE MILES AWAY FROM THIS HISTORICAL SPOT IS THE KRANJI WAR MEMORIAL --- BUILT IN MEMORY OF ALL THOSE SOLDIERS WHO DIED DURING THE BATTLE FOR SINGAPORE. AROUND THE MEMORIAL ARE THE GRAVES OF THE SOLDIERS -- AUSTRALIANS, BRITISH, NEW ZELANDERS AND OTHER ALLIED TROOPS.

    TODAY THE INFAMOUS POW CAMP AT CHANGI STILL STANDS. BEHIND THESE GRIM WALLS CAPTURED ALLIED SERVICEMEN WERE HELD AS PRISONERS OF WAR. A GROUP OF FOURMEN AUSTRALIAN POWS THIS WEEK VISITED THE GAOL, IN WHICH THEY WERE CONFINED TO DURING THE THREE YEAR OCCUPATION. THE LEADER OF THE GROUP, COLONEL JOHN MUSNLOW WILLIAMS, A MEMBER OF EX-POWS ASSOCIATION OF AUSTRALIA HIMSELF SPENT SOME TIME IN THE CAMP AFTER HE WAS CAPTURED IN JAVA.

    THREE YEARS LATER IT WAS THE JAPANESE TURN TO SURRENDER. THE SURRENDER DOCUMENT WAS SIGNED ON THE CITY HALL STEPS WHICH OF HOUSES THE PRIME MINISTERS DEPARTMENT AND GOVERNMENT OFFICES. IT WAS HERE EARL MOUNTBATTEN, THE SUPREME COMMANDER OF THE ALLIED FORCES, ACCEPTED THE JAPANESE SURRENDER. EARL MOUNTBATTEN IS CURRENTLY IS SINGAPORE THIS WEEK TO RE-ENACTED FOR TELEVISION THE SCENE OF THE JAPANESE SURRENDER.

    MEANWHILE ABOUT HUNDRED MILES NORTH OF SINGAPORE IS ANOTHER LINK WITH THE PAST. AT THE VILLAGE OF PARIT SULONG AUSTRALIAN SOLDIERS IN THE DAYS PRECEDING THE FALL OF SINGAPORE FOUGHT A BITTER BATTLE TO STEM THE JAPANESE ADVANCE OVER THE MUAR RIVER. IN PARIT SULONG AUSTRALIANS ARE STILL REMEMBERED AND A PLAQUE OF THE PRIDE KEEPS ALIVE THE MEMORY OF A HEROIC STAND.
