  • Description

In Chile, the military junta which overthrew President Allende's government last September is continuing the land reform programme begun by the Frei government in 1967.

The ownership of vast tracts of land by wealthy farmers, but worked by peasants, has been a dominant political issue in Chile for many years.

Limited reform was initiated by former President Frei but failed to go far enough for the majority of poor peasants.

The re-distribution of land was a major plan in President Allende's socialist government but it strongly alienated middle-class farmers and landowners when it was aggressively pursued.

The new military junta, while abandoning most of President Allende's left wing economic policies, has realised the political importance of continued reform, although it has put a stop to the unilateral seizure of land by peasants.
