Background: Lebanon's Foreign Minister, Mr. Khalil Abou Hamad, on a one-week tour of India, laid a wreath at the memorial to the late Mahatma Gandhi in New Delhi on Saturday (December 9). Later that day -- the first day of his tour -- he met Indian Foreign Minister Mr. Swaran Singh.
Mr. Hamad was expected to meet Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi during his visit, and was scheduled to have trade talks with the Indian Government.
SYNOPSIS: Lebanon's Foreign Minister, Mr. Khalil Abou Hamad, laid a wreath at the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi in New. Delhi on Saturday -- the first day of his week-long visit to India. He stood in silence and prayed for a few moments, and then went on to pay homage at other memorials in the city -- including one to Pandit Nehru, one of India's best-known Prime Ministers.
Later in the day Mr. Hamad went to the Ministry of External Affairs to have talks with India's Foreign Minister, Mr. Swaran Singh.
